House Fire on South 86th Street

Narrative: At 1:49 a.m seven companies of Tacoma and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters were dispatched to a reported residential house fire.

The first arriving company found about 50% of the front and carport side of the approximately 950 square foot single story residence engulfed in flames. Operationally, crews attacked the fire with handlines, conducted ventilation of the toxic smoke and completed search and rescue to assure no one was in the house. All 5 of the homes occupants were able to escape safely and there were no injuries to report.

Fire investigators believe the cause of the fire appears suspicious and are referring the case to Tacoma Police Department for further investigation. The fire caused an estimated $65,000 dollars damage to the building and contents.

UPDATE: Preliminary investigation suggested this fire was possibly suspicious in nature, however, upon further investigation this morning, fire investigators now believe that the fire cause is undetermined.

Sound Transit Bus Fire 17th and Pacific Ave

Narrative: At 3:23 p.m firefighters responded to a report of a transit bus fire on 17th and Pacific Ave. First arriving crews found flames and smoke showing from the rear axle and wheel area of the sound transit bus. Crews quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to the interior of the vehicle.

There were two occupants on the bus, and no injuries to report. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Narrative: At 4:19 a.m. seven companies of Tacoma Firefighters responded to a reported residential structure fire.

First arriving crews found heavy smoke showing from the back of the approximately 1,800 square foot one story house with a basement. Crews attacked the fire with handlines, conducted a search of the house and ventilated the heavy smoke from building. The fire displaced two occupants and their were no injuries to report.

The probable cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction in a portable space heater, resulting in an estimated $35,000 dollars damage to the property and its contents.

As we continue with some "winter" like weather conditions over the next several days TFD reminds everyone of the following safety tips regarding portable space heaters.

Select heaters with tip-over and overheat protection
Give heaters their space – 3 feet from combustibles
Plug heaters directly into outlets – not extension cords
Turn off heaters when leaving them unattended

TFD Bestows Medal Of Valor Awards For 5 Tacoma Firefighters

It is with great pride that the Tacoma Fire Department recognized five firefighters with the medal of valor award in a ceremony today. The departments highest award, the medal of valor is given to firefighters who demonstrate:

A conspicuous act of bravery and heroism in an extremely hazardous situation - above and beyond the call of duty
By such action, the employee placed him/herself in imminent danger that probably would have resulted in great bodily injury or death
The objective was of sufficient importance to justify the risk

The awards were given related to a tragic 2009 house fire incident, where crews rescued two occupants out a bedroom window and one occupant (who later passed away) down a narrow stairway with intense fire threatening their escape route.

Award Recipient's were:

Ben Flesher, Battalion Chief - 28 years of service

Alex Wilsie, Lieutenant - 15 years of service

Casey Novak, Lieutenant - 9 years of service

Richard Turley, Lieutenant - 12 years of service

Patient Extrication From Commercial Fishing Vessel

Narrative: At 1:45 p.m. Tacoma Firefighters responded to a reported person injured on a commercial fishing vessel moored at a pier in the Port of Tacoma.

First arriving crews arrived to find a injured worker in the hold of the vessel. The incident commander called for the technical rescue team to assist with the removal of the patient from the ship. Firefighters secured the patient, used a stokes stretcher to lift them safely from the hold and transported them to an area hospital.

Tacoma Residents Can Recycle Christmas Trees For Free-2011

TFD encourages you to remove and recycle your natural Christmas tree as soon as possible. Never burn the tree, decorations or wrapping paper in your fireplace or woodstove.

Landfill drop-off: Tacoma residents, apartment tenants and businesses in Tacoma may dispose of undecorated and unflocked trees free by bringing them to the recycling center at the City of Tacoma Landfill (3510 S. Mullen St). Trees may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Dec. 26 through Jan. 22. The landfill will be closed Jan. 1. Apartment managers or landlords who collect tenants’ trees may drop them off all at once for free, but are encouraged to call (253) 591-5543 in advance. Tree lot operators and nonprofit groups must pay for disposal.

Curbside collection: Solid Waste Management will collect only trees that have been cut and placed inside the brown yard waste container with the lid closed flat. Trees left next to containers will not be collected. Tacoma residents may recycle Christmas trees free at the Tacoma Landfill’s Recycling Center (3510 S. Mullen St.), Dec. 26 through Jan. 22. Decorated or flocked trees cannot be recycled and must go in the garbage. Customers with questions about Christmas tree recycling may call (253) 591-5543.

TFD food drive supports YWCA - 2011

An annual event since 2003, Tacoma Fire Department takes great pride in supporting our local YWCA women's shelter. Department employees hosted several friendly contests to see which team could bring in the most donations - with firefighters on "C" shift narrowly edging out the "D" shift crews as top contributors.

Established in 1906, the YWCA Pierce County has devoted over a century to creating opportunity and safety for women and children in our community. A forerunner in the domestic violence service provision field, the YWCA established Washington State's first domestic violence shelter in 1976.

A human supply chain of firefighters and YWCA staff helped unload and stock over 5,000 pounds of non-perishable staples that will help feed the programs participants throughout the holidays and for many months to come. "Having a variety of food on hand that we can prepare for our clients is truly a blessing and we are very grateful for TFD's support of the shelter", said Karin White-Tautfest, Director of Shelter and Advocacy Services.

2011 Firefighter's Christmas Project

Tacoma Firefighters raise $14,000 to brighten the holidays for 110 local families.

For the past 23 years, Tacoma Firefighters have brought holiday cheer to the lives of thousands of Tacoma children and their families with deliveries of food, clothing and gifts just before Christmas. This year, firefighters have raised over $14,000 dollars to help more than 110 children and families in need.

“It’s always a great honor to help bring a little happiness to those in need during the holidays,” said project co-founder Lieutenant Jim Lee (other co-founders include Lieutenant Andrea Schroeder and Firefighter Ron Ernst). This year’s contributors include active and retired Tacoma Firefighters, Tacoma Professional Firefighters Local #31, the Tacoma Fire Department and the Office of the Pierce County Council.

Special deliveries from a fire engine, medic unit and Santa Claus are scheduled for Dec. 17 and Dec. 22. This year’s recipients were identified through the Tacoma School District Head Start Program, YWCA Women’s Shelter, and the Sharing House.

The graduates completed 14 weeks of intensive preparation, and have been diligently training to respond to hazardous materials incidents, vehicle extrication operations, confined space rescue, fire suppression, and emergency medical incidents.

"Tried and True" Recipe For A Safe Thanksgiving

According to data from the United States Fire Administration, an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires are reported to fire departments each year, causing an estimated 5 deaths, 25 injuries, and $21 million in property loss.

As you prepare for Thanksgiving this year, Tacoma Fire Department encourages everyone to follow this "tried and true" recipe for a safe holiday.

When it comes to cooking:

Keep a close watch on your cooking. Never leave cooking food unattended.
Keep oven food packaging and combustibles away from burners and heat sources.
Heat cooking oil slowly and watch it closely; it can ignite quickly.
Have a "kid-free zone" of at least three-feet around the stove.
Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires.
Make sure you have a working smoke alarms.

Help us spread the word about tomorrow's big test!

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and National Weather Service will conduct their very first national test of the Emergency Alert System on Nov. 9 at 11:00 a.m. The test may be up to 30 seconds long and is expected to be broadcast simultaneously over all communication service providers: television stations (including digital television, cable, satellite audio and television services) and broadcast radio stations across the U.S. and several U.S. territories.

Calls to 9-1-1 to inquire about the test are not advised, as they may delay dispatch centers from receiving calls from citizens reporting true emergencies. For detailed information, visit the FCC's website.

Fall Back On Sound Advice: Time to change your clock and smoke alarm batteries!

As daylight savings time approaches, please remember to check/change the batteries in your smoke alarms when you change your clocks back this Sunday, November 6.

Smoke alarms most often fail because of missing, dead or disconnected batteries, so maintenance is a simple and effective way to protect your family and reduce home fire deaths.

According to the Washington State Fire Marshal, the majority of fire deaths in our State occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Furthermore, the peak time for home fire fatalities is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. - when families are sleeping and most vulnerable!

For best protection, it is recommended that people install alarms utilizing both (ionization and photoelectric) technology and ones that have long life 10 year batteries. If your smoke alarm was installed before November 2001, it needs to be replaced.

Visit the United States Fire Administration and National Fire Protection Association for additional information regarding smoke alarm types, installation, maintenance and safety.

One Arrested In Overnight Halfway House Fire - South Sheridan Street

Narrative: At 2:11 a.m. Tacoma Firefighters responded to a reported residential structure fire at 1947 S. Sheridan Street. The first arriving engine company found heavy flames and smoke showing from the first floor of the the two story 1,700 square foot house. Crews attacked the fire with hand lines and used a ground ladder to rescue one occupant trapped on the second floor. All 6 of the homes occupants escaped without injury and were aided by the Red Cross with relocation assistance.

Tacoma Police Department arrested one of the occupants on scene suspected of starting the blaze, and the fire caused an estimated $75,000 dollars damage to the building and it's contents.

Narrative: At 12:14 p.m. seven companies of Tacoma Firefighters (four engines, one ladder, one medic company and command staff) responded to a reported house fire.

The first arriving engine company found heavy flames and smoke showing from the attached garage area of the over 3,000 square foot residence. Crews attacked the fire with hand lines, conducted primary search and rescue and paramedics transported one occupant to an area hospital as a result of their injuries. Firefighters were also able to locate and rescue the family dog trapped in the house.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Fire Prevention Week October 9-15, 2011

Great Turnout For CPR Sunday

The 14th annual CPR Sunday event was a tremendous success this year. "We are very grateful to the over 800 hundred participants who turned out to learn how to perform CPR and use an Automated External Defibrillator," said TFD firefighter and co-organizer Craig Hannah. The fire displaced one occupant and there were no injuries to report. The cause of the fire was failed electrical wiring, resulting in an estimated $105,000 dollars damage to the building and its contents.

Narrative: At 3:22 a.m. ten companies of Tacoma firefighters (six engines, one ladder, two medic companies, and command staff) responded to a reported residential structure fire.

First arriving units found a heavy flames and smoke shooting from the second floor and roof area of the two-story approximately 3,600 square foot house. Crews battled the well established blaze with hand lines and protected the two neighboring houses from igniting due to the the intensity of the heat. Additionally, the ignition of the cedar shake roofing materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire a crossed the roof line.

The two occupants of the home were able to escape safely and there were no injuries to report. The cause and origin of the fire are currently under investigation.

Hazardous Conditions Call Murray Morgan Bridge

Narrative: At 11:45 a.m firefighters were called to a report of a hazardous condition on the Murray Morgan Bridge.

First arriving firefighters found that the protective plastic sheathing surrounding one of the towers on the bridge (related to construction) had failed and a large volume of particulate matter was being blown from the scene. The incident was upgraded to a hazardous materials call to bring in additional resources to determine the nature of the plume of material coming out of the site.

The Incident Commander and Haz-Mat technicians determined that the plume consisted primarily of materials used in the sand blasting process (inert) and the scene was turned over to the general contractor to secure the sheathing and for clean up.

Fire at Lowell Elementary

Narrative: At 1:14 p.m. ten companies of Tacoma firefighters (five engines, two ladders, two medic units and command staff) responded to a reported fire at Lowell Elementary School.

First arriving companies found flames and smoke showing from a teacher/staff kitchen located in the "primary wing" area of a building on campus. Crews attacked the fire with handlines and contained the fire to the room of origin - preventing it from spreading to the two classrooms housed in the building.

There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Preliminary indications are that the fire was accidental in nature.

UPDATE: Investigators have determined that unattended cooking spark the blaze and caused an estimated $40,000 damage to the building and its contents.

House Fire on 49th and North Pearl Street

Narrative: At 2:15 p.m. seven units of Tacoma firefighters (four engines, one ladder, one medic company and command staff) joined Ruston firefighters on scene for a mutual aid residential house fire.

Crews used handlines and vertical ventilation techniques to swiftly attack and bring under control a fire that originated in the basement area of the house and had spread to the first and second floors.

The fire displaced four occupants (two adults and two children) and their were no injuries to report.

The cause and origin investigation is being conducted by the Ruston Fire Department.

Ammonia Leak Forces Evacuation

Narrative: At 6:46 a.m. 7 units of Tacoma firefighters (three engines, one ladder, one medic unit, haz-mat 44, and command staff) responded to a reported ammonia leak at a fuel and ice distribution business.

Hazardous materials technicians made entry into the building and confirmed that a leaking pipe caused a minor Ammonia release. Air monitoring equipment indicated elevated levels of Ammonia vapors in the building representing a significant respiratory risk.

Operationally, the leak was located and stopped, the occupants of the source business, one adjacent business and four nearby houses were evacuated for precautionary measures. Firefighters are currently conducting a methodical process of ventilating the building and monitoring the air quality to mitigate the hazard.

There were no injuries to report.

Firefighters Embark On Tribute Ride to New York City

Tacoma, WA: Nearly 40 firefighters from Western Washington joined forces today to embark on a roughly 3,000 mile motorcycle ride in honor of the victims of the September 11th attack. Departing from the Tacoma Firefighters Memorial on Ruston Way, the group is currently making its way along I-90 and will be joining thousands of firefighters from the International Association of Fire Fighters who are riding in solidarity. The group is expected to reach New York City on September 9.

One of several riders from Pierce County, Tacoma firefighter Will Yuste considered this opportunity a "great honor to pay tribute to all who lost their lives that day and to let those left behind know that the extended fire service family has not forgotten”.

National Preparedness Month - September 2011

The City of Tacoma Emergency Management would like to remind everyone that September is National Preparedness Month (NPM). NPM focuses attention on what citizens should do to ready themselves, their families and their communities for potential disasters. This years theme is "a time to remember a time to prepare". You can help remember the tragic events of 9/11 by joining us at our annual September 11th ceremony and you can get prepared by completing the following.

According to Ready.Gov, the U.S. government’s official preparedness website, there are three key steps for each citizen to become prepared for an emergency:

Get A Kit: Keep enough emergency supplies on hand for you and those in your care. For example, water, non-perishable food, first aid, prescriptions, flashlight, and a battery-powered radio.
Make A Plan: Discuss, agree on, and document an emergency plan with those in your care. Work together with neighbors, colleagues and others to build community resilience.
Be Informed: Free information is available to assist you from federal, state, local, tribal, and territorial resources.

CPR Sunday Registration Is Open

CPR Sunday is an annual community event offered free-of-charge to anyone interested in learning the basic life-saving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). On the second Sunday in October each year, students are taught the fundamentals of CPR and then given the opportunity to practice with CPR manikins and Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Over 900 participants attended this life saving class last year.

Narrative: At 5:11 a.m. seven companies of Tacoma Firefighters (4 engines, 1 Ladder, 1 Medic Company and command staff) responded to a report of a residential house fire.

The first arriving crew found smoke showing from the front of the two story approximately 2,300 square foot house with a basement. Crews attacked the fire with hand lines, and completed primary search and rescue. It was determined that no one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries to report.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

UPDATE: The cause of the fire was failed electrical wiring, resulting in an estimated $40,000 damage to the building and it's contents.

House Fire on "M" Street

Narrative: At 7:41 a.m seven companies of Tacoma Firefighters (four engines, one ladder, one medic company, and command staff) responded to a reported residential structure fire.

First arriving companies found heavy smoke and flames showing from the upper floor of the 1 1/2 story 2,386 square foot bungalow. Crews mounted an aggressive interior attack with hand lines, vertically ventilated the building to release heat and smoke from the attic area and conducted primary search and rescue. Working smoke alarms alerted the occupants to the fire and all escaped without injury.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

UPDATE: The cause of the fire was an overheated lamp, resulting in an estimated $30,000 damage to the building and its contents.

Commercial Stucture Fire at former Heidelberg Brewery Building

Narrative: At 11:48 p.m. nine companies of Tacoma Firefighters (5 Engines, 2 Ladders, 2 Medic Companies and command staff) responded to a reported roof fire in a commercial building. First arriving companies found a well established fire on the roof and upper floor area of a portion of the Columbia-Heidelberg brewery complex. The fire was upgraded to a second alarm at 12:22 a.m. (3 additional engines and 2 ladders) - securing more resources to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjacent buildings.

Due to the size of the structure, the response was divided into two tactical operation zones and two ladder company aerial master streams were deployed to attack the fire from above. Using a well coordinated "defensive strategy" the fire was extinguished and contained to the area of origin (the eighty-five thousand square foot turn of the century building is vacant and currently being demolished)

Fire crews also made considerable salvage efforts to help preserve the inventory of the Pierce County Toys for Tots program being stored in the warehouse building exposed to the fire.

There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

UPDATE: Fire investigators have concluded that the area of origin of the fire was in a room on the top floor of the building, but are undetermined as to it's cause. There are no obvious signs that the fire was deliberately set or is suspicious in nature.

Fireworks Are Prohibited in Tacoma

With the 4th of July holiday fast approaching, Tacoma Fire Department offers this reminder - fireworks are prohibited in Tacoma.

All fireworks are illegal within the Tacoma city limits and violators of the fireworks law are subject to a fine and the confiscation of their fireworks.

Most fireworks violations are class 2 civil infractions and can result in a $257 fine; citizens using fireworks are also subject to arrest for other charges (i.e. arson, reckless burning, and assault). Fireworks are only permissible within city limits when a permit has been issued for a sanctioned public event.

Citizen’s can report fireworks violations from July 1 to July 6 by calling (253) 798-4722. If the fireworks violation appears to put people or property in immediate danger, call 911.

House Fire on South "L" Street Displaces 4 Occupants

Narrative: At 8:23 p.m. Tacoma Firefighters responded to a reported house fire. First arriving companies found flames and heavy smoke showing from both floors of the two story wood framed 2,100 square foot single family home. Crews extinguished the fire with hand lines and completed primary and secondary search and rescue.

The occupants were alerted to the fire by smoke alarms, and were able to evacuate without injury. "Thankfully, the working smoke alarms activated in this situation, because given the heavy volume of smoke and fire, this could have easily been a tragic outcome" said Battalion Chief Jolene Davis.

The cause of the fire was unattended cooking, resulting in an estimated $75,000 dollars damage to the building and $25,000 dollars to it's contents.

After evacuating the office, standard testing for hazardous materials including biological, radiological and chemical substances were conducted by the haz-mat team. The field test results were negative and the scene was turned over to law enforcement and the U.S. postal service for follow-up.

There were no injuries to report.

Mattress Fire on East "F" Street

Crews arrived to find moderate smoke showing from a second floor bedroom of the two story 3,256 square foot "Clean and Sober Living" house. A rapid interior attack extinguished a mattress fire, and primary search and rescue revealed that all of the occupants were alerted to the fire by the buildings smoke alarm system and escaped safely.

The cause of the fire was unattended cigarette and resulted in an estimated $11,000 damage to the building and its contents.

Tacoma Fire Department Welcomes New Recruits

Family and friends gathered for a cheerful graduation ceremony today, as the Tacoma Fire Department welcomed 21 new firefighters to their ranks this afternoon. The graduates completed 13 weeks of intensive preparation, and have been diligently training to respond to hazardous materials incidents, vehicle extrication operations, confined space rescue, fire suppression, and emergency medical incidents.

Successfully completing the classroom, hands on and competency based testing allows these recruits to graduate to probationary firefighter status and they will continue to demonstrate their skills over the next 9 months at which time they will achieve firefighter in full standing. Crane Rescue Training at the Port of Tacoma

Narrative: Members of the Tacoma Fire Department technical rescue team spent the past two days training for high angle rescues at the Washington United Terminal (WUT) in the Port of Tacoma. The crews simulated the rescues on the 300 foot panawax gantry cranes located on the Blair Waterway.

The TFD crews coordinated their efforts with the ILWU Local 23, longshoremen union.

The crew practiced multiple rotations of high angle rope rescue systems, belay systems, tag lines, anchor systems and patient pickoff rescues.

Initial reports were that one occupant was trapped in the house, but primary and secondary search and rescue revealed no one was home at the time of the fire. Firefighters battled the fire with hand lines and the ladder companies crew completed vertical ventilation techniques to address the heavy fire in the attic area.

There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

UPDATE: Investigators have determined that the cause of the fire was an unattended cigarette, resulting in $20,500 damage to the building and its contents.

Entry Level Firefighter Exam

Over the past two days, candidates for entry level firefighter positions have been hard at work completing the written test phase of the application process. Designed to establish an eligibility list, the written exam is only one part in a series of steps taken to join the ranks of TFD. Nearly 3,000 applications were received, and most attended one of 4 testing sessions held at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall. This eligibility list will be used to fill TFD's vacant positions for the next couple of years. However, it is not yet been determined when the next recruit class will be hired.

Hazardous Material Spill - Port of Tacoma

Narrative: At 3:51 a.m. five companies of Tacoma Firefighters (1 engine, 1 ladder, 1 medic unit, haz-mat 44 and command staff) were dispatched to a reported hazardous materials spill on a cargo ship in the Port of Tacoma.

First arriving companies were informed by employees that a small quantity of a highly flammable liquid - Chlorobenzotruiflouride (an ink solvent used in the printing industry) had spilled in a container on the terminal dock and in the hull area of the "Hyundai Oakland" cargo ship moored at the Washington United Terminal.

Tactically, the ships crews were sheltered in place for precautionary measures, the Haz-mat team investigated the scope of the spill and monitored the atmosphere for fume/explosion hazards, and the businesses contracted technical clean up crew was called in to conduct the clean up of the spill.

Two employees that were initially exposed to the spill were evaluated by paramedics and released at the scene. There were no injuries to report.

Heavy Rescue and Structural Collapse Training

Over the past few weeks, members of the Tacoma Fire Department Technical Rescue Team have attended a heavy rescue and structural collapse course funded by a federal grant through the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI). The 80 hour course, hosted by the Seattle Fire Department, consists of 30 hours of pre-course work and 50 hours of hands on practical training. Firefighters from Bellevue, Renton, Tukwila, North Highline and Snohomish County fire departments participated.

The course is designed to help develop the skills necessary to rescue and care for patients in confined spaces and structural collapse situations (e.g. a bridge or building collapses after an earthquake). The team receives hands on training in crane operations, the use of metal cutting torches, breaching walls, cutting concrete with hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical tools, hand rigging and the carpentry skills necessary for creating wall supports critical in stabilizing scenes and rescuing victims. All of this training culminates in a mock disaster exercise with over 50 victims trapped in a wide array of difficult situations.

Pt. Defiance Pagoda Fire

Narrative: At 4:25 a.m. 12 companies of Tacoma Fire Department firefighters responded to a reported fire in the Pagoda Building at Point Defiance Park.

First arriving companies found heavy smoke showing from the iconic two story assembly occupancy. Once it was determined the fire had spread throughout both floors of the structure, the fire was upgrade to a Second-Alarm at 4:45 a.m..

The incident was divided into two operational zones with crews fighting the fire with hand lines and 2 1/2 inch diameter hoses on both floors from opposite sides of the building. Crews also worked very hard to extinguish the fire that was in the roof area while preserving as much of the historical structure as possible. (The unique design of the roof system with heavy timber, high cathedral ceiling and heavy tile roof - all represented dangerous collapse conditions for the firefighters). There were no injuries to report.

UPDATE: The cause of the fire is currently undetermined, however is suspicious in nature.

UPDATE TWO: Preliminary damage estimates are $250,000 dollars damage to the building and $20,000 dollars damage to it's contents.

Recruit Firefighters-Live Fire Training

Narrative: On April 6, 2011, 24 Tacoma Fire Department recruit firefighters and their instructors participated in search and rescue drills, flammable liquid extinguishment and live fire training drills at the Washington State Fire Academy training grounds in North Bend, WA.

The recruits practiced basic and advanced skills needed for a firefighter to function efficiently during interior search and rescue missions using their self contained breathing apparatus.

They participated in field exercises utilizing specially designed mockups of automobiles burning at a curbside and other portable flammable liquid props. They learned the behavior of flammable liquids, the procedures required to safely control and extinguish flammable fuel fires and also the environmental concerns that must be addressed.

Lastly, the recruits took part in the "Burn to Learn" course which is designed for new firefighters and presents an unusual opportunity to review hose handling basic skills in a demanding fireground scenario.

Pacific Avenue Apartment Fire

Engine 10 was the first company on seen and reported flames coming from the backside of the single story, wood frame apartment building. Fire attack was initiated with a 2 1/2" preconnect hoseline due to the heavy volume of flames. Roof ventilation was completed and the crews rapidly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to the adjoining apartment.

Two occupnats were home at the time of the fire. They both were able to self rescue themselves. Tacoma Fire transported one patient to a local area hospitial.

The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

Injury Apartment Fire on S. 93rd Street

First arriving companies found a kitchen fire in the first floor of the 4 unit, 3,648 square foot apartment building. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading beyond the apartment unit of origin. The two occupants of the apartment suffered injuries while trying to extinguish the blaze.

Initially, a helicopter was requested and a landing zone established at a local elementary school to transport one of the patients. However, due to poor weather condition, the helicopter was canceled by the airlift company. Both patients were then transported by TFD.

The cause of the fire was cooking, resulting in estimated $2,500 damage to the building and its contents.

Narrative: At 9:35 p.m. TFD dispatched units for a reported car versus semi-truck collision with a fire. First arriving units found a vehicle that had rolled over and was off to the side of the road fully involved in flames. Crews temporarily blocked all lanes of the freeway while they battled the fire and assessed the vehicles occupants for injuries. Heavy wreckers were called in to stabilize the semi-truck that was also damaged and tilting over.

One patient was transported from the scene to a local area hospital.

47th Ave NE Fire Displaces Three

The first arriving engine company found fire in a first floor bathroom of the 1,650 square foot two story house. Crews quickly mounted an offensive attack to knock the fire down that had spread accrossed the the ceiling and throughout the attic area. All of the occupants of the house escaped safely.

The fire displaced a family of three, and there were no injuries to report. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

First arriving companies found several employees reporting feeling sick due to a strong unidentified odor. Upon further investigation it was determined that a floor refinishing operation in an adjacent portion of the building was causing the smell. In a well coordinated attack, crews extinguished the fire that had broken out in the lower level, ventilated the building and conducted search and rescue. There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

UPDATE: The fire was caused by overloaded electrical wiring that was related to a Medical Marijuana grow operation, resulting in an estimated $50,000 dollars damage to the building and its contents.

Crews quickly attacked and knocked down the fire that had broken out in a back bedroom of the house. The home’s occupants escaped without harm, and there were no injuries to report.

The cause of the fire was an overheated extension cord, resulting an estimated $25,000 dollars damage to the home and its contents.

First arriving companies found smoke showing from a first floor apartment unit in the two-story multifamily dwelling. Crews mounted an aggressive interior attack and contained the fire to the unit of origin. One person was transported to a local area hospital as a result of the incident.

The cause of the fire is undetermined, resulting in 1 injury and an estimated $30,000 in damage to the building and its contents.

Tacoma Fire awarded SAFER Grant

The Department of Homeland Security has awarded $1,566,699 to the Tacoma Fire Department from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant to bolster firefighter staffing levels.

The SAFER grant provides funding to departments to help them increase the number of trained front-line firefighters available in their communities. The grant will enable the department to hire 10 new firefighters to help meet the demands for emergency calls and nationally recognized standards for safe and effective firefighter staffing.

“Being selected for this grant award is significant for our community,” said Fire Chief Ron Stephens. “This funding will help us continue to provide a fast, safe and effective response to the variety of emergency incidents in our community.”

According to U.S. Senator Patty Murray, “Firefighters across Washington State put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities and families safe. I am very glad that the City of Tacoma received this grant to put 10 new firefighters on the job. I am going to keep working with local communities to make sure they have the resources they need to protect their families.”

The Tacoma Fire Department was selected from over 2,100 applicants nationally and is currently one of only four recipients from Washington State.

Crews attacked the fire that had broken out in the "overhead area" (the space between the ceiling and the roof area) with handlines, ventilated the heavy smoke layer and searched the building for occupants.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined and it resulted in an estimated $50,000 damage to the building and it's contents. Their were no injuries to report.

Burn Awareness Week February 6-12, 2011

According to the American Burn Association and Shriners Children’s Hospital,

about 95 percent of scald burns (which are caused by hot liquids, steam or foods) occur in the home. Scalds are the most common burn injury among young children and the leading cause of accidental death in the home for children under age 4. U.S. hospitals treat an estimated 16,000 children under 5 for scalds every year.

Here are some recommendations to help prevent scald injuries.

- Lower the temperature settings on water heaters to 120° F (49° C) or less.

- Install anti-scald devices on water faucets and shower heads.

- Use knob covers on faucets.

- Create “kid free zones” in the kitchen near the stove.

The fire displaced 4 occupants from their house and all escaped without harm. The fire was was sparked by an electrical problem, resulting in an estimated $13,000 dollars damage.

These two fire incidents are considered unrelated.

Changes to Washington States "Emergency Zones" Law

Changes to Washington States "Move Over" law went into effect on January 1, 2011. The emergency zone law was expanded to apply to Department of Transportation (DOT) crews and tow trucks, as well all emergency response vehicles.

Last week DOT Cameras and KOMO News captured the following video that clearly illustrates the dangers for first responders on freeway calls. Thankfully, none of our firefighters, or the driver was injured in this crash. But this close call is a clear reminder that when you see us out there - "move over & slow down". We appreciate it!

Commercial Fire at 70th and Pacific Ave

Narrative: At 7:14 a.m. TFD responded to a reported commercial structure fire.

The first arriving companies found smoke and flames showing from the roof area of a teriyaki restaurant. Crews made entry and quickly extinguished the fire that had broke out in the kitchen area. They also checked for fire extension into the roof area and to the neighboring businesses.

The fire activated the commercial kitchen fire suppression system, which significantly reduced the damage to the business and helped prevent the fire from spreading to the other businesses in the building.

The cause of the fire was an overheated deep fat fryer, resulting in an estimated $12,500 damage to the building and it's contents. There were no injuries to report.

Yakima Street Fire

Narrative: At 0256 the call came into TFD's dispatch center reporting a possible structure fire. The first arriving company (Battalion 2) was onscene at 0259 and reported a 3-story residential structure with light smoke showing from floor 1 and 2 and heavy smoke showing from the roof. The residence was reported as to be set uphill and well off the road. The first engine company onscene made access and attacked the seat of the fire on floor 2 with an 1 3/4" preconnect hoseline. The first ladder company assessed the ventilation needs and performed vertical ventilation on the roof. Fire was reported to have spread to floor 3 and an additional attack line was initiated to attack the fire on floor 3.

At 0323 the fire was reported extinguished by the Incident Commander.

The American Red Cross was activated and assisted 12 displaced residents.

One individual was transported to a local area medical facility.

The fire is currently under investigation from the Tacoma Fire Prevention Bureau.

First arriving companies found a single story residence with heavy smoke and fire showing from the attached garage. The occupant’s dog was located safely and removed from the smoke filled home by the Medic Unit conducting search and rescue operations.

Firefighters were able to keep most of the fire from spreading from the garage to the living area. However, the four occupants of the home were forced to relocate due to smoke damage.

Water Flow Incident in Fife

Narrative: At 3:02 p.m. TFD dispatched units for an automatic water flow alarm in a commercial building.

The first arriving company found water cascading down from the ceiling onto the interior loading dock area of the food distribution business. Crews quickly shut off the water and power supplies and began the process of clearing the water from the business. Orders were given to evacuate the building when it was determined that a the large amount of water was trapped in the space between the roof and second floor ceiling. The volume of trapped water was heavy enough that it represented a collapse hazard to the structure.

After a couple hours of draining the water, crews were able to safely make entry into the space and determine that a fire suppression sprinkler head had burst, activating the fire pump and three additional sprinkler heads. The cause of the bursting sprinkler head is under investigation.

There were no injuries to report.

Tacoma Residents May Recycle Christmas Trees For Free

Please dispose of your Christmas tree properly - never burn the tree, decorations, or wrapping paper in your fireplace or woodstove (or outdoors).

Landfill drop-off: Tacoma residents, apartment tenants and businesses in Tacoma may dispose of undecorated and unflocked trees free by bringing them to the recycling center at the City of Tacoma Landfill (3510 S. Mullen St.). Trees may be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Dec. 26 through Jan. 24. The landfill will be closed Jan. 1. Apartment managers or landlords who collect tenants’ trees may drop them off all at once for free, but are encouraged to call (253) 591-5543 in advance. Tree lot operators and nonprofit groups must pay for disposal.

Curbside collection: Solid Waste Management will collect only trees that have been cut and placed inside the brown yard waste container with the lid closed flat. Trees left next to containers will not be collected. Tacoma residents may recycle Christmas trees free at the Tacoma Landfill’s Recycling Center (3510 S. Mullen St.), Dec. 26 through Jan. 24. North End RV Fire

The first arriving engine company found heavy smoke and flames shooting from the front of an approximately 40 foot 5th wheel style RV. Crews used attack lines and Class B fire suppressing foam to knock down the fire. Complicating the scene, was the fire directly impinging on the energized power lines overhead.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and there were no injuries to report.

Tacoma Firefighters raise $14,000 to brighten the holidays for 140 local families

For the past 22 years, Tacoma Firefighters have brought holiday cheer to the lives of thousands of Tacoma children and their families with deliveries of food, clothing and gifts just before Christmas. This year, firefighters have raised over $14,000 dollars to help more than 140 children and families in need.

“It’s always a great honor to help bring a little happiness to those less fortunate during the holidays,” said project co-founder Lieutenant Jim Lee (other co-founders include Lieutenant Andrea Schroeder and Firefighter Ron Ernst). This year’s contributors include active and retired Tacoma Firefighters, Tacoma Professional Firefighters Local #31, The Tacoma Fire Department and the Office of the Pierce County Council.

Special deliveries from a fire engine, medic unit and Santa Claus are scheduled for December 22 and December 23. This year’s recipients were identified through the Tacoma School District Head Start Program, YWCA Women’s Shelter, the Sharing House and Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital.

TFD food drive supports YWCA

An annual event since 2003, Tacoma Fire Department takes great pride in supporting our local YWCA. Department employees hosted several friendly contests to see which team could bring in the most donations - with the firefighters on "D" shift narrowly edging out the "day shift" staff as top contributors.

While the internal competition was fierce, the real winner was the residents of the YWCA women's shelter. Since 1976, this vital organization has been helping women and children overcome the grips of domestic violence. A long human supply chain of firefighters and YWCA staff helped to unload and stock a whopping 7,400 pounds of non-perishable staples. "We were thrilled to be able to deliver a record amount of food to the shelter this year" said TFD Training Captain and event organizer Steve Stock. "We had so much, that we ran out of space in their storage room - that was awesome!"

Candles

Always use candle sticks or non flammable holders.
Extinguish all candles when leaving the room or going to sleep.

Christmas Lights

Do not link more than three lights strands, unless the directions indicate it is safe.
Any lights with worn, frayed or broken cords or loose bulbs should not be used.
Always unplug tree lights before leaving home or going to sleep.

Cooking

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S..
If you must leave the kitchen while preparing food, set a timer or carry a pot holder to remind you that food is cooking.

Christmas Trees

Keep your tree away from fireplaces, portable and baseboard heaters.
Try to keep fresh cut trees as moist as possible by giving it plenty of water each day.
Dispose of fresh-cut trees properly. Never burn it in a fireplace or wood stove.

Fatality Semi-Truck Fire

Narrative: At 2:09 a.m. 4 companies for Tacoma Firefighters, 3 engines, 1 ladder and command staff responded to a reported semi-truck fire with explosions.

First arriving crews found a semi-truck and trailer fully involved in fire. Firefighters used hose lines and Class B foam to contain the fire to one vehicle. After the fire was extinguished, crews found one deceased person in the cab of the truck.

Tacoma Police and TFD fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause and origin of the fire and what caused the fatality.

A positive identification of the deceased person, as well as the cause and manner of their death will be determined by the Pierce County Medical Examiner.

Industrial Accident - Tide Flats

Frozen Water Pipes

As the recent cold snap comes to an end - many homeowners and businesses will be dealing with yet another hazard - broken water pipes. As the water in pipes freezes it expands - causing the pipes to crack or burst. You won’t often know there is a problem until the temperatures warm enough to melt the ice and allow for water to flow. If you are experiencing the unfortunate dilemma of frozen or busted water pipes – here are a few things you need to know.

Homeowners:

Most importantly, know where and how to shut off your main water supply before you have a problem. There should be a main valve for your house (usually located in the basement or crawl space) and one at the water meter pit.
The pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, such as outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas such as basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.
Make sure pipes located in exterior walls, or in floors over unheated spaces (such as a bathroom above an attached garage) are insulated and protected. Keep your garage door closed.
Remember to never use an open flame torch (fire danger) or boiling water (will cause the pipes to burst) when thawing pipes. A hair drier on low setting works well.
Select a licenced plumber to assist you in making any necessary repairs.

Businesses:

Make sure that any exterior piping is insulated and hose bib’s are covered.
Increase the building temperature to prevent freezing (particularly warehouses – storage facilities).
Fire Sprinkler systems that go out of service require you to institute a Fire Watch until the system is operable.

Thanksgiving Fires Are Preventable

As you prepare for the Thanksgiving Holiday, Tacoma Fire Department encourages everyone to follow this "tried and true" recipe for a safe celebration.

According to data from United States Fire Administration, an estimated 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires (in residential buildings) occur annually in the United States, resulting in an estimated average of five deaths, 25 injuries and $21 million in property loss each year. The majority of these fires are related to making the wonderful holiday feast.

When it comes to cooking:

Keep a close watch on your cooking. You should never leave cooking food unattended.
Keep oven food packaging and other combustibles away from burners and heat sources.

Heat cooking oil slowly and watch it closely; it can ignite quickly.
Don't wear loose sleeves while working over hot stove burners - they can melt, ignite or catch on handles of pots and pans spilling hot oil and other liquids.
Have a "kid-free zone" of at least three-feet around the stove and areas where hot foods or drinks are prepared or carried.
Keep a lid nearby to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stove top. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.
Make sure you have smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. Test smoke alarms monthly and replace them if they are 10 years old or older.

Transit Bus Rollover Crash

Narrative: At 10:40 a.m. TFD units were dispatched to a reported Pierce County Transit Bus Rollover accident. First arriving companies found a bus that had slid off the road, struck a retaining wall and rolled on its side at one of the entrances to the University of Washington Tacoma campus.

Approximately 15-20 people were on the bus at the time of the accident, and medic crews evaluated and transported 10 of those passengers to local area hospitals as a result of their injuries.

No students or by-standers were injured in the crash.

November 15th Wind Storm

Narrative: At approximately 9:00 p.m., a wide spread high wind storm swept through the greater Tacoma area causing numerous power outages and knocking several trees down. TFD relied on it's back-up generators to power several fire stations and our dispatch center, during the outage. Tacoma Fire Communications Center dispatched units to 47 incidents (in Tacoma's response area) between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.

The majority of these calls were for downed power lines and fallen trees, but they also included calls for people trapped in elevators or offices, and a boat house that broke loose in the narrows marina and drifted into a dock. Fortunately, there were no injuries to report to citizen's or firefighters.

Storms like these illustrate the value of having a family disaster preparedness kit and remember that in the event of an extended power outage, use flashlights instead of candles (fire hazard) for light and never bring your barbecue indoors to heat or cook with (carbon monoxide poisoning).

A Bird Stuck in A Tree?

Tacoma Fire Department recently responded to a request for assistance for a "bird stuck in a tree...". How could a "bird be stuck in a tree" you ask? Upon arrival, the crew from TFD's Ladder 3 had their answer.

A Falconer was training a wild Red Tailed Hawk by tethering it to a very long, thin cord and letting it practice flying back and forth. Unfortunately on one of the flights, the cord got caught up high in the branches of a large maple tree near the duck pond at Point Defiance Park.

Ladder 3's crew extended a 35' ground ladder allowing a firefighter to climb up, unhook the tangled tether, and re-hook their own rope to carry the hawk down safely.

All-in all a successful operation, with no injuries to report to the falcon or firefighters.

Cushman Street House Fire

Narrative: At 3:07 p.m. units were dispatched to a reported house fire at 5401 S. Cushman Street. Five Tacoma Fire Engines, along with one Central Pierce Fire and Rescue Ladder Company, Tacoma Medic Units and Command staff responded.

The first arriving crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the 2 story house. Firefighters entered the first floor of the home to attack the fire and search the home, but found the stairway to the second floor was burned through. Firefighters had to use ground ladders from the exterior of the building to access the second floor of the structure for fire attack and search and rescue.

As a result of the fire, one person was transported to an area hospital and one pet perished. The fire displaced 6 occupants, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

UPDATE: Investigators have determined that the cause of the fire was a child playing with ignition materials. The fire caused an estimated $90,000 damage to the house and it's contents.

Smoke alarms most often fail because of missing, dead or disconnected batteries, so maintenance is a simple and effective way to protect your family and reduce home fire deaths.

According to the Washington State Fire Marshal, the majority of fire deaths in our State occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Furthermore, the peak time for home fire fatalities is between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. - when families are sleeping and most vulnerable!

For best protection, it is recommended that people install alarms utilizing both (ionization and photoelectric) technology and ones that have long life 10 year lithium ion batteries.

A Pair of Early Morning Fires

Narrative: At 1:17 a.m. 10 companies of Tacoma Firefighters, 5 engines, 2 Ladders, 2 Medic Units and Command Staff responded to a reported commercial structure fire.

First arriving companies found a fire in a back storage room of the Subway Shop located on the ground floor of the three story business occupancy. Firefighters quickly forced entry and mounted an aggressive interior attack, knocking the fire down, containing it to the area of origin and preventing it from spreading to the additional 10 suites in the building.

Fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was an overheated extension cord that ignited combustible materials. The fire caused an estimated $30,000 damage to the building and contents.

There were no injuries to report.

Narrative: At 1:55 a.m. 7 companies of Tacoma and Central Pierce Firefighters, 4 Engines, 1 Ladder, 1 Medic Unit and Command Staff responded to a reported garage fire.

First arriving crews found a fully involved garage fire. A defensive strategy was used to prevent the spread of the fire to the adjacent structures. The fire caused approximately $160,000 damage, completely destroying the 1,100 square foot garage, 2 vehicles and its contents.

The cause of the fire was an overheated Chiminea being used to heat the garage. These devices are not designed for interior use.

There were no injuries to report.

Fatality Apartment Fire

Narrative: At 8:11 p.m. 10 companies of Tacoma firefighters, 5 engines, 2 ladders, 2 medic units and command staff responded to a reported apartment fire.

First arriving companies found smoke showing from a ground floor unit of the two story multi-unit apartment building. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin and primary search and rescue revealed that one adult occupant was deceased upon our arrival.

Fire investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. There were no other injuries to report.

UPDATE 10/19/10: Investigators have determined that the fire started when the occupant accidentally caught their clothing on fire on a burner on the stove. The fire resulted in $1,700 of damage to the property and contents and did not displace any other tenants in the building.

Exceptional Turnout for CPR Sunday

Narrative: At 12:56 p.m. 6 companies of Tacoma Firefighters, 4 engines, 1 ladder, 1 medic unit and command staff responded to a reported kitchen fire.

First arriving companies found smoke and flames showing from the rear of the 2 story single family residence. An aggressive interior attack contained the fire to the kitchen and a portion of the attic and roof area.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and there were no injuries to report. The Red Cross was called to provide assistance for the 2 adults and 6 children displaced from the fire.

UPDATE:
The cause of the fire was unattened cooking, resulting in an estimated $60,000 damage to the building and contents.

Industrial Fire In The Tide Flats

Narrative: At 5:00 p.m., 9 companies of Tacoma Firefighters, 5 engines, 2 ladders, 2 medic units and command staff responded to a reported fire at Schnitzer Steel metal recycling yard.

First arriving companies found heavy smoke and flames coming from a large pile of compacted cars. After approximately three hours of firefighting using aerial master streams, firefighters were finally able to extinguish the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently undetermined. Three people were transported to local hospitals in relation to this event.

Fire Prevention Week Open Houses!

Residents can celebrate Fire Prevention Week by visiting six neighborhood fire stations from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, October 9. This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: A sound you can live with,” encourages everyone to team up and spread the message that fire safety saves lives!

Equipment will be on display and firefighters will answer questions about escape planning, fire safety and disaster preparedness.

Free CPR Training - CPR Sunday - October 10th

CPR Sunday is an annual community event offered free-of-charge to anyone interested in learning the basic life-saving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). On the second Sunday in October each year, students are taught the fundamentals of CPR and then given the opportunity to practice with CPR manikins and Automated External Defibrillators (AED). Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a Tacoma Fire Department certified CPR card (good for two years). Over 6,000 participants have attended this life saving class.

CPR Sunday will be held Oct. 10, at Foss High School, 2112 S. Tyler St. in Tacoma.

Boxing Night a Smashing Success

Guns & Hoses Charity Boxing

Saturday evening, local area firefighters and police officers will square off to display their skills and raise money for local charities at the second annual Guns & Hoses Charity Boxing Event.

Several 3 round matches of hard hitting action are scheduled. Tacoma firefighters Jeremy Marraoquin, Marlon Ridgeway, Jeff Bambrick, Damon Semingson and Debbie Garrison are currently training and set to fight.

All boxing matches will be fought following USABoxing amateur rules and the fights will be:

(3) 2 minute rounds – under 35 yrs old
(3) 1 ½ minute rounds – 35-49 yrs old
(3) 1 minute rounds 50+ yrs old.
