Improperly discarded cigarette sparks rooftop deck fire

Incident Date:  7/3/13
Incident Location:  320 N. Tacoma Ave
Incident Type:  Structure Fire

Narrative:  At 8:37 a.m. firefighters from stations 1,2,4,9,11,13, and 17 responded to a reported apartment fire.

The first arriving company found dark smoke showing from the roof of the five story multi-family dwelling. Crews quickly made access to the roof where they found a deck made of composite material was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the fire, and confirmed that there was no extension into the roof of the structure or apartments below. None of the occupants needed to be evacuated and there were no injuries to report.

The cause of the fire was an improperly discarded cigarette igniting a foam cushion that dropped down on the decking. The fire resulted in an estimated $875 damage.
