TFD responds to a pair of early morning fires.

Incident #1  (Note - these were two unrelated incidents)

Time:  6:19 a.m.

Narrative
:  Firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire. The first arriving company found smoke and flames showing from a third floor apartment in the twelve unit, 11,600 square foot building. Crews mounted an aggressive interior attack, conducted a search to confirm no one was trapped inside, and evacuated occupants in adjacent apartments. The fire was contained to the apartment of origin and the Red Cross was requested to provide relocation assistance to the six occupants displaced in the fire. There were no injuries to report.

The cause of the fire was an unattended candle that ignited nearby drapery, resulting in an estimated $36,000 damage to the building and its contents.

Injuries:  Total of 2:  1 patient transported, 1 patient treated and released at the scene

Narrative:  While in-route to TFD's coverage of the Sound to Narrows race, Medical Service Officer Michael Newhouse noticed a large column of smoke showing from the E. Portland Avenue area. MSO Newhouse notified TFD dispatch to send units to that location, and upon arrival he found a fully involved house fire with one injured patient outside the structure. TFD paramedics rushed the patient to an area hospital, while additional crews attacked the well-entrenched fire, removed the heat and smoke through vertical ventilation, and conducted a search of the structure to confirm all occupants were out and accounted for.

The Red Cross was requested to provide relocation assistance to the remaining six adults and one child displaced in the incident.

The cause of the fire is was undetermined, and resulted in an estimated $65,000 dollars damage to the building and its contents. A fire investigator also found there were no working smoke alarms in the residence.

Narrative:  Firefighters responded to a reported fire at a residence. The first arriving company found a small gasoline fueled fire around a service entrance to a cable box. Crews extinguished the fire and Tacoma police department had one person in custody for starting it at the time of our arrival.

Narrative:  Firefighters responded to a reported house fire. The first arriving company found smoke and flames showing from the second floor of the two-story 1,040 square foot house. Crews extinguished the fire that started in a bedroom with handlines and confirmed no one was inside the residence. The house was vacant and under renovation, and it appears that someone had made access into the building and started the fire. The incident was referred to Tacoma Police Department for follow-up.

Narrative:  Crews responded a reported kitchen fire and upon arrival found burnt food had caused smoke to fill the kitchen. The fire was contained to the food.

Narrative:  Firefighters responded to a reported house fire. The first arriving company found a small fire in the basement of the residence. A lacquer based sealant was being applied to the basement floor and the vapors appear to have ignited on the pilot light of the furnace or water heater. Crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the smoke from the structure. There were no injuries to report.

Narrative:  Firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire. The first arriving engine company found that occupants had burnt food on the stove. On-site maintenance crews had removed the pan and turned off the stove prior to our arrival.

Narrative:  Firefighters responded to a reported kitchen fire. The first arriving engine company found flames and smoke showing from the back of the two story duplex. Crews attacked the fire that had started in the lower level apartment with handlines, conducted a search to confirm all occupants were out safely and ventilated the building of smoke. The cause of the fire was unattended cooking oil overheating and igniting, causing an estimated $53,000 dollars damage to the building and its contents. There were no injuries to report and the Red Cross provided relocation assistance to four adults and one child displaced in the incident.

Narrative:  Firefighters responded to a reported boat fire at the Tyee Marina. Upon arrival the small boat was moved away from the larger vessel it was tied up to, and Firefighters extinguished a fire in the battery compartment on the starboard side of the boat. Firefighters determined that an electrical problem with the battery had caused the fire.

Narrative:  A working smoke detector alerted occupants to a smoldering mattress fire. Upon investigation it appears that an improperly discarded cigarette started the fire. Crews removed the mattress, extinguished the fire and ventilated the smoke.

Narrative:  Crews responded to a reported house fire.  The first arriving engine company found smoke and flames showing from an upstairs bedroom of the 2 story 1,950 square foot single family residence. Firefighters attacked the fire with handlines, conducted a search to confirm no one was trapped in the building, and ventilated the smoke from the structure. The fire displaced three occupants, and there were no injuries to report.  The cause of the fire was improperly discarded smoking materials.
