Roof collapse ignites commercial structure fire in a foundry manufacturing facility

Incident Date:  7/25/13
Issuing Officer: Joe Meinecke
Incident Location:  3021 S. Wilkeson St.
Incident Type:  Commercial Structure Fire

Narrative:  At 6:15 p.m. firefighters and command staff from stations 1,2,4,8,10, and 17 responded to a reported commercial structure fire.

The first arriving company found an approximately 50 x 50 fire burning in a section of a large commercial manufacturing building. Command staff quickly called for a second alarm bringing additional resources from stations 9,11,12,and 13.  In all over, 40 fire personnel responded to the scene.

For an undetermined reason, a portion of the roof above a molten metal castings operation collapsed onto the hot material and caught fire. All employees were able to escape without harm, and are safely accounted for.

Given the structural instability of the building, crews have mounted a defensive strategy on the fire. The current operational plan is to allow the collapsed roofing material to burn off and to allow the molten metal to cool down before final extinguishment.  It expected to take several hours before the fire is fully extinguished.
